At Hedley House, we believe everyone deserves a comfortable and enjoyable stay in York. While our Victorian building presents some challenges, we've made numerous adaptations and continue to improve our facilities. This page provides detailed information to help you plan your visit.
Building Access
Getting to and around Hedley House
Arrival and Entrance: The main entrance has 5 steps with handrails We have a portable ramp available for wheelchair users (please call ahead) Staff are always available to assist with luggage and access Doorbell at accessible height • Well-lit entrance • Door width: 90cm
Reception and Common Areas: Reception desk has a lowered section | Seating available in reception area | Ground floor has level access throughout main areas | Some narrow corridors typical of Victorian buildings (minimum width 75cm) • Good lighting throughout | Clear signage with large print
Lifts and Stairs: No lift available in the main building Main staircase has handrails on both sides Stair edges marked with contrasting colours 15 steps to first floor, 15 steps to second floor | Some ground floor rooms available (see Room Information)

Finding the right room matters. We understand mobility needs vary.
Ground Floor Rooms - We have two ground floor rooms suitable for guests with mobility requirements:
Superior Room
- Ground floor location
- Large spacious layout
- Super king and single bed OR 3 single beds
- Walk-in shower
- Designed for less able guests
Studio Apartment
- One small step inside the apartment
- Wheelchair-accessible bathroom
- Bath with shower overhead
- Grab rails in shower area
- Wheelchair can enter bathroom but NOT the shower
- NO seat in shower
Other Rooms
- All other rooms are on the first and second floors
- No lift access available
- Please contact us to discuss your specific requirements

Self-Catering Apartments

Our self-catering apartments are located in an adjacent building:

Step-Free Route from Railway Station We can provide detailed directions for a step-free route from York Railway Station to Hedley House (approximately 8-10 minutes)
Accessible Attractions York Minster has level access, a lift, and accessible toilets | National Railway Museum is fully accessible | Jorvik Viking Centre is accessible for wheelchair users | City centre has many dropped kerbs and accessible crossings
Accessible Transport Most city buses are low-floor with wheelchair spaces | Several taxi companies offer wheelchair-accessible vehicles | We can arrange accessible transport on request
