Introduction

From family dream to York landmark

Hedley House isn't just a hotel – it's the story of a family who turned their passion for hospitality into a York institution. For nearly four decades, we've welcomed guests from around the world, creating a place that feels like coming home.

The Beginning

How it all started

Hedley House Hotel began as a family dream in 1983 when Graham and Susan Harrand opened its doors. With determination and a clear vision of creating a welcoming haven in York, they transformed these Victorian buildings into a warm, inviting hotel.

Their son Greg grew up learning every aspect of hospitality, watching his parents create memorable stays for their guests. The hotel became his playground, classroom and eventually his calling.

The Journey

Finding our way

After university, Greg set off to explore the world, working in hospitality across different countries and cultures. He gathered fresh ideas about using technology and wellness to enhance the guest experience, all while developing a deeper appreciation for the family business back home.

When the time came, Greg returned to York, bringing with him a wealth of international experience and innovative approaches to hospitality. Together with his wife Louise, they began to shape the next chapter of Hedley House.

The Life-Changing Moment

When everything changed

In December 2004, life changed dramatically for Greg and Louise Harrand. While travelling in Thailand, they found themselves caught in the devastating tsunami that struck on Boxing Day. They survived but spent time in hospital recovering from their injuries.

This life-changing experience transformed their approach to business and life. As they rebuilt their lives after the disaster, they gained clarity about what truly matters: family, friendships, and meaningful connections with others.

"When you face something like that, it strips away everything but what's essential. We realised life is about the connections we make and how we care for each other. That's what we wanted Hedley House to represent." – Greg Harrand

The Life-Changing Moment

When everything changed

Upon returning to York, Greg and Louise brought this renewed perspective to Hedley House. They didn't just want to offer rooms – they wanted to create spaces where people connect, relax, and feel at home.

This philosophy now shapes every aspect of Hedley House Hotel:

Creating a warm, family atmosphere where guests feel welcomed | Adding wellness facilities to help guests truly relax and recharge | Focusing on personal touches that make stays memorable | Building a team that shares their values of genuine care | Supporting the local community and sustainable practices
